How Biiper Works
Biiper creates its own communication network between devices—no cell towers, no satellites, no subscriptions. Here's the technology that makes it possible.
LoRa: Long Range Radio Communication
Biiper uses LoRa (Long Range) radio technology, operating in license-free frequencies that anyone can use. Unlike Bluetooth (30 feet) or Wi-Fi (300 feet), LoRa reaches miles.
LoRa is specifically designed for low-power, long-range communication. Your Biiper can run for days on a single charge while still reaching impressive distances.

Mesh Networking: Messages That Find Their Way
Every Biiper isn't just a sender and receiver—it's also a relay. When you send a message, it can hop through other Biiper devices to reach its destination.
Here's how it works:
- You send a message to a friend 6 miles away
- Your message reaches another hiker 2 miles out
- Their Biiper automatically relays to someone else
- The message hops until it reaches your friend
Messages can hop through 7+ devices, dramatically extending your effective range. The more Biipers in an area, the stronger the network.
Intelligent Routing: Beyond the Mesh
Here's what makes Biiper different from other mesh devices: when any device in the network has internet connectivity, everyone benefits.
Your messages aren't trapped in local radio range. They automatically find the best path to their destination—whether that's:
- Direct radio to a nearby device
- Hopping through multiple mesh nodes
- Bridging through a device with connectivity to reach the internet
Practical scenarios:
- Leave a Biiper in your car at the trailhead (phone paired for cell)
- Keep a Biiper at base camp with Wi-Fi
- Another hiker closer to civilization has cell service
Your backcountry messages find their way home automatically. No configuration required—Biiper handles the routing intelligently.

End-to-End Encryption
Every message is encrypted with AES-128 before it leaves your device. This means:
- Only intended recipients can read your messages
- Relay devices can't see message content—they just pass it along
- No central server ever sees your unencrypted messages
- More private than regular SMS or many messaging apps
Your location data and message content remain private, even as they hop through the mesh network.
The Biiper App
Your Biiper pairs with the free smartphone app via Bluetooth. The app provides:
- Familiar chat interface (like texting)
- Offline maps with GPS tracking
- Group channel creation and management
- Contact management
- Location sharing controls
- Device settings and battery status
Your phone handles the interface; Biiper handles the communication. If your phone dies, Biiper still works for basic functions—pre-set messages, group alerts, and LED status indicators.
Available for iOS 14+ and Android 10+.
